An Ode to Empathy

Empathy, your name is as precious as precious as can be
Your being, as human as human can be
Your heart beats so kindly, oh so kindly over me
Your thinking senses others, so sensitively within me

You are the connectedness of two inner selves
A connection meshing you and me
An instinct relating two beings
Like the warmth of mother holding baby

Synchronising the fixation of lover's eyes
Arousing feelings of metamorphosis
Enticing friend and foe
In tandem with understanding

You help beings reflect each other
In time, in place and in love
I laugh, you laugh, you cry, I cry
Soothing the dreary toils of life

Touching, embracing, reciprocating
Read like an open book
You change, crystallise and connect
Them to us, me to you

Resonating, crossing over, merging
Emotional similarities, values and virtues
You overcome adversity and bring
Comfort, hope and togetherness

You emanate kindness
Forging the unfeeling into feeling
Making the unbearable bearable
Reconciling damned divided selves

No longer bereft, rejected, abandoned
You piece together our broken hearts
Morphing the feelings of pain into
Sublime painlessness and joy

Dissipating the fears of loneliness and, hey
We belong, now worthy, now human
The tie that binds all cherished lives
You are the embodiment of social connectedness

If only, if only the world would resist
Humankind's organised antipathy
And exterminate the sacrificing of empathy
In the name of narcissism, racism and materialism

Unite to inoculate the world against
The sickness of human indifference
Proslytise, energise, prioritise
Inject the highest dose imaginable

Into our precious most precious
Unconquerable power of empathy and
Make us truly worthy of ourselves
Amid a cushion of mutual consciousness

If only, if only the world would
Only empathise
